BITTNER Simon William Bittner, 76, retired businessman and sterling citizen of Meyersdale for many years, was found dead in bed Tuesday morning by one of his daughters at his home on Main Street. For the last few years he had been an invalid, having suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he only partially recovered and which left him infirm. His beloved wife died only three weeks ago, and her demise probably hastened his end. He was born Dec. 23, 1868, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Bittner*. He was engaged in the retail meat business in Meyersdale for a good many years after which he was a traveling salesman for the A. H. Johnson Memorial Works for 28 years until ill health compelled his retirement. Through his business connections he made many friends in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia, in which he sold the products of the Johnson Memorial Works. He served for some time as a member of the Meyersdale Borough Council and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and the local lodges of Oddfellows and Modern Woodmen. He was a public-spirited citizen, and a kind and good husband and father. Surviving are six children: Mrs. P. P. Hauger, Rockwood; Mrs. B. J. Morgan, Canonsburg; Mrs. E. J. Cornell, Memphis, Tenn.; Mrs. Bessie Dwire, at home; Mrs. Samuel E. Boyer, Pittsburgh, and one son, Elmer, Meyersdale. He also leaves four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at the home by his pastor, Rev. R. M. Dunkleberger. Interment will be in Temple Cemetery, White Oak, under the direction of H. R. Konhaus.
