Bittner passed away at the home of his son, Calvin Bittner, in Boynton, where he made his home, at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 16. He was the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Baker) Bittner of Meyersdale. He was born in Meyersdale, April 29, 1864, where he spent his young days till after his marriage to Miss Ellen Grove in 1883, when he moved to Boynton and lived there until his death. His wife preceded him in death 24 years ago. To this marriage were born nine children, three of whom are dead. Surviving are: John, Howard, Calvin, Mrs. Jennie Tressler, Mrs. Gertrude Walker and Mrs. Nora Thompson, all of Boynton. He also leaves 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was the last survivor of his parents' family. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and was known as "Grandpap" by many. Funeral services were held at the home of his son, Calvin Bittner, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. J. B. Warman, pastor of the Meyersdale First Methodist Church. Interment was held in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Salisbury under the direction of Stanley M. Thomas, Salisbury mortician. Meyersdale Republican, January 22, 1942
