BLACK Elizabeth Matthews Black, 86, died Nov. 22, 1995, of respiratory failure in Winchester Memorial Hospital, Winchester, Va. Black was born Aug. 30, 1909, in Tacoma, Washington. She was one of seven daughters of Walter Smoot Matthews and Maria Louisa (Devereux) Green. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Black, in 1979. She is survived by her sister, Frances Kev John R. Place [sic] of Charlestown, W.Va.; Frank S., Jr., married to the former Barbara Onderchek of Bethesda, Md., and Garrett, Pa.; Elizabeth, the wife of R. Coy O'Connor of Argyle, Texas; Virginia, the wife of Dale P. O'Connor of Winchester, Va.; and Catherine, the wife of Shane L. Shisler of Keller, Texas; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Black graduated from Western High School in Washington, D.C., and lived for many years on the family dairy farm near Garrett before returning to Washington, D.C., where she retired as a legal secretary in 1968. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, being a direct descendant of George Plater, fifth colonial governor of Maryland and General Uriah Forrest, aide-de-camp to George Washington during the American Revolution. She was also a member of Sacred heart Parish in Winchester, Va. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 2 at Sts. Phillip and James Church in Meyersdale. Interment, Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
