BLOCHER Garrett County, Maryland This community was deeply shocked last week to learn of the death of one of its oldest residents, Mrs. Harriette A. Blocher, a native and also one of the oldest residents of Garrett County. Mrs. Blocher died early Thursday morning, Nov. 7, at the home of her son, John Blocher, Jennings, whom she was visiting. She arrived at her son's home about two months ago and shortly afterward fell down a short flight of steps. Although she suffered no serious injuries in the fall she had been confined to her bed for about seven weeks and it is thought the shock, together with her advanced age, brought on complications causing her death. A daughter of Amos and Sally Broadwater, Mrs. Blocher was born in the Fairview section, April 11, 1845, and had spent practically her entire life in Garrett County. Despite her advanced age, she was alert and active both mentally and physically, and until the accident occurred appeared to be in excellent health. Her time was spent visiting among her children. Mrs. Blocher was the oldest decendant of the Cornelius Broadwater clan and took an active part in the annual reunions of this family. Last August she was an outstanding figure at this assembly, appearing with five generations of her family, her daughter, Mrs. Sally Bowers, her granddaughter, Mrs. Silas Durst, Jennings, her great- granddaughter, Mrs. Neal Morris and her great-great-grandson, Richard Morris, Ohiopyle, Pa. On this occasion too, she recited a poem of her own composition, "The Unseen Hand." Mrs. Blocher was the widow of Jacob Blocher, who died many years ago. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom survive. They are Sally A. Bowers, Jennings, Mrs. Effie Custer, Eckhart, Mrs. Enoch Robeson, Avilton, Mrs. Zelphia Wilt, Swanton, Mrs. Louise Wilt, Westernport, and John Blocher, Jennings. Also surviving are forty-one grandchildren, eighty-eight great- grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Thus Mrs. Blocher, in her passing, leaves one hundred and thirty-eight descendants. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The Rev. Leonard L. Wright, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, Frostburg, and Rev. Virgil R. Gillum, pastor of the Grantsville and New Germany Methodist Churches, conducted funeral services at the New Germany Methodist Church, Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. Serving as pallbearers were Ira L. Huff, Porter Wilt, Edwin Robeson, Glenn Custer, Victor Blocher and Ray Wilt, all grandsons of Mrs. Blocher. Flower bearers were Mrs. Harry L. Yommer, Fanny Wilt, Viola Wilt, Mrs. Gay Warnick and Miss Mary Custer, all granddaughters; and Mrs. Neal Morris, Ohiopyle, Pa., a great-granddaughter. Meyersdale Republican, November 14, 1940
