'Bodg' 10/11/07 Daily American Walter E. "Bodg" Bodziak Sr., 89, Maple Ridge, died Oct. 10, 2007, at Regional Hospice at Windber. Born Nov. 26, 1917, in Boswell, son of George and Catherine (Ryniak) Bodziak. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Mary Ann Tomaszewski, April 12, 1995; brothers, Stanley and Charles; sisters, Mary Murray and Blanche Steve; and nephews, John "Butch" and Charles Murray. Survived by daughter, Theresa, married to Lee J. College, Rockwood; son, Walter E. Jr., married to Kathryn Madey, Windber; grandchildren, Scott and Patrick College, Lisa (College) Kicher and Matthew, Stacey, Michael and Susan Bodziak; and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister-in-law, Catherine Bodziak, Boswell; brother-in-law, John Tomaszewski and wife, Yoletta, Aliquippa; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Michael Shull and Melissa Reckner. A 1938 graduate of the former Boswell High School, where he excelled in football and basketball. Retired miner for Bird Coal Co. and Island Creek Coal Co., both in Tire Hill, with over 40 years of service. Army veteran of World War II, having served with Company B, 209 C, Engineer Battalion. Wounded in Burma, June 14, 1944, and later received the Purple Heart. Also recipient of the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Service Medal and the Asia-Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. Avid hunter and bowler. Loved the Steelers and the Pirates and especially loved his pet dogs. Member of VFW, UMWA and the Somerset County Old Timers Baseball Association. Also a member of Saint Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville, the Holy Name Society and was an usher at the church for more than 50 years. Viewing from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Church Road, Davidsville, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Friday afternoon. The Rev. Father Michael Lewandowski, OFM, Conv., presiding. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Anne Church, with his nephew, the Rev. Father Charles W. Bodziak, celebrant. Committal Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, Boswell, with graveside military rites accorded by the Conemaugh Valley Marine Corps League. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Regional Hospice at Windber, 600 Somerset Ave., Windber, PA 15963.
