BOWEN Dr. Ralph Childs Bowen, aged 60, prominent Cumberland physician, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, in Allegany Hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 20. In ill health for three years, Dr. Bowen suffered a heart attack last week and had been unconscious for several days. A native of Calvert County, Md., he was the son of the late Reuben and Cassandra Jane (Bowen) Bowen. He attended St. John's College, Annapolis, and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 1907. He practiced medicine in Grantsville for thirteen years. He came as an assistant to Dr. H. L. Bevans who died within a few years after Dr. Bowen became his assistant and, eventually, his successor. Dr. Bowen was very successful in his practice and was highly respected in this community. His Grantsville friends often received medical advice from him after he moved to Cumberland and also visited him and his family at their home there. Dr. Bowen married Miss Rose Callaghan of Dennison, Ohio, an instructor in the Grantsville school. She spent several years at the home of her aunt, the late Misses Dorsey and her uncle, D. W. Dorsey, at the Casselman Hotel, prior to her marriage. Dr. Bowen studied in Baltimore after leaving Grantsville and established a practice in Cumberland in 1922. He was on the medical staff of the Allegany and Memorial hospitals, also a member of the county and state medical societies and the Rush Medical Society of Baltimore. He belonged to Cumberland Council, Knights of Columbus, to the Cumberland Kiwanis Club, and was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Jane Bowen at home, and Mrs. Wilfred Owen, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, First Lieutenant Ralph C. Bowen, serving with the Marine Air Corps in the South Pacific, and Capt. Francis D. Bowen with the Medical Corps at the Veterans hospital, Newington, Conn.; two brothers, Orville Bowen, Front Royal, Va., and William Bowen, of Huntingtown, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Hardesty, Huntingtown, Md., and Miss Kathleen Bowen, Barstow, Md. Two grandchildren also survive. A solemn requiem mass was held Friday at 9:00 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church. Rev. Irenaeus Reini, O.F.M. Cap., pastor, officiated Interment was made in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. W. A. Gracie, Dr. L. R. Meyers, Dr. C. L. Owens, Dr. F. P. O'Neil, Dr. R. W. Trewaski, Dr. Lysle Everhart and Dr. S. E. Enfield. Members of the Allegany Hospital Nurses Alumnae Association met at the Bowen home, Thursday evening to recite the rosary. They attended the funeral in a group. Relatives who attended the funeral were: Capt. Francis Bowen, Newington, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Bowen, Front Royal, Va., Glenn and Kenneth Bowen (nephews), Huntingtown, Md.; Miss Anna Callaghan, East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.; D. W. Dorsey and F. J. Getty, Grantsville, also a friend, Franklin Forsyth, Front Royal, Va. Meyersdale Republican, March 8, 1945
