Born Nov. 24, 1925, in Girardville, a daughter of the late Edward V. and Catherine M. (Foy) Sweeney. Also preceded in death by her husband, Richard M. Bowman. Survived by sisters, Margaret (Sweeney) Krafchik, Narberth, and Mary Grace (Sweeney) Wersinger, Bethlehem; brothers, Edward J. Sweeney, Texas, and John P. Sweeney, Mechanicsburg; stepson, Edward Bowman, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Eleanor graduated from Girardville High School and attended McCann School of Business, both in Schuylkill County. She had an impressive career with Sears Roebuck & Co. and when promoted to manage the local Sears store, Eleanor embraced Somerset as her home. She was also employed by Neilan Engineering and was a licensed real estate agent with the Shirley Schrock Agency in Confluence. Eleanor became a state-certified sewer inspector for Jefferson Township and was the first female in Pennsylvania to achieve that distinction. Regionally, Eleanor and Dick Bowman were well known for Bakersville Brass, their co-proprietorship of rare items, antiques, brass polishing and related tales of fact or fiction. Eleanor supported the Somerset Association for the Blind and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a patron of the arts, politically active, and advocated anything "Somerset," promoting the county's businesses and resources whenever possible. Friend, neighbor, sister or aunt... Eleanor will be remembered as truly splendid. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, the time of service, in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home, Somerset. Father Derek Fairman, celebrant. Committal in Somerset County Memorial Park will be private.
