Mr. Bowser was dead when he was brought from the mine and efforts of the Grantsville Fire Dept. and State Police, who were using the Cumberland Police Department's resusitator proved futile. A group of boys who were stationed at the entrance of the mine when the roof including a 600 pound rock fell, assisted in recovering the body, which was shattered by the fall. According to persons nearby, farmers living near the mine, which is located on state-owned property five miles west of Grantsville, along the Amish road on Negro mountain, have been taking sand from the mine for use on their farms. Several other men were working in the mine that morning but left before the fall. Surviving besides his wife, are four sons, Wilbur, at home, near Bittinger, Russell, stationed in the State of Washington, in the armed service, Alvin and Olin also at home, and two daughters, (Hilda) Mrs. Harold Green, near Bittinger, and (Olive) Mrs. Park Hetrick, also near Bittinger, also a nine-year-old adopted son, Perry Broadwater.
