Suffered Fatal Accident Near Beechdale Israel Brant, 87, of Garrett R.D. 1 was killed Sunday night when he was struck by an automobile while attempting to cross Route 219 at Beechdale, near Berlin. Brant, a retired farmer, suffered a fracture of the skull. Coroner Sass of Somerset County, who conducted an investigation into the death of Brant, said the aged man had been in the Horning general store along the highway and had started to cross the road to his daughter's home. The automobile of E. E. Moore of East Main Street, Somerset, traveling north on Route 219, appeared on the scene. Moore said he swerved to the left in an effort to avoid striking the aged man. Brant was hit by the rear right door of the car and knocked to the highway. Moore was released on his own recognizance pending further investigation. Israel Brant was a son of Frederick and Phoebe (Schrock) Brant and had been residing with his daughter, Mrs. James Lynch of Beechdale. Surviving are these children: Mrs. Lynch, Jasper Brant, Dunkirk, N.Y.; Ezra Brant, Berlin R.D.; Roland Brant, Somerset R.D.; Fred Brant, Berlin R.D.; Mrs. Bella Hoffmaster, Berlin, R.D.; Mrs. Charles Fornwald, Cleveland, O.; and Mrs. Frank Beachley, Cumberland, Md. He was a brother of Mrs. Lucinda Cober, Berlin; Mrs. Eliza Baker, Berlin, and Mrs. Sue Faust, Cleveland, O. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Beechdale Church of the Brethren. Rev. A. Jay Replogle officiated and was assisted by Rev. N. V. Leatherman, pastor of the Berlin Brethren Church. Interment was in the Beechdale Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Berlin. Meyersdale Republican, December 11, 1941
