His eagerness to rescue a chest containing his savings, between $300 and $400, it is believed to have been the cause of his remaining inside the burning dwelling until escape was cut off. The dwelling as well as the chest of money was reduced to ashes. About two o'clock the aged man noticed that a small sheet-iron stove pipe which ran from the kitchen through the roof was overheated and that the ceiling was ablaze. In a small chest in the attic was the money. He and his wife made frantic efforts to extinguish the blaze and when they realized that they were helpless in fighting the fire the old man started for the attic, using the only means a ladder, by which it was accessible. The charred remains of Mr. Brant where (were?) taken from the ruins by Undertaker Johnson, of Berlin. Besides the son who lived with him, Mr. Brant is survived by a son William, of Somerset; a daughter, Mrs. David Faust, of near Berlin; John of Somerset township, and Samuel of Berlin.
