He was born near Bittinger, Md., May 7, 1871, the son of Deacon John Brenneman and Lydia Beachy Brenneman. He was married, January 30, 1898, to Barbara Orendorf, who preceded him in death May 3, 1941. He was ordained to the ministry in the Amish Church, Nov. 18, 1913, at Maple Glen Church near Grantsville. In early manhood he engaged in farming. When the Amish-Mennonite Children's Home was established in 1914, Mr. Brenneman was appointed superintendent, and his wife took care of the children in their home near Bittinger until the large brick home near Grantsville was finished in the spring of 1916, when they moved the children into it. He served as superintendent until July 1, 1928, when on account of sickness and age he was relieved of the heavy responsibility, but he continued to assist in the work until 1938 when the work was discontinued. During the time the Home was under the supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Brenneman many homeless children, sometimes as many as 85 at one time, were cared for in the home. They were not children of the Amish sect, but of any or no denomination and came from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio or even more distant states. Mr. Brenneman served the Castleman River District of the Amish-Mennonite Church as minister until two years ago, when ill health compelled him to relinquish all activity. Mr. and Mrs. Brenneman had no children. His only survivors are two half- brothers, Manassas Brenneman of Kolona, Ia., and Eli Brenneman, Vallejo, Calif., and one half-sister, Mrs. Solomon Orendorf of Accident, Md. Funeral services will be held at the Maple Glen church house, Grantsville, Friday, June 4, at 9:30 a.m. Meyersdale Republican, June 3, 1948
