Briscoe Succumbs to Long Illness Ministered to Sick In Rural Communities For Many Years - Laid To Rest at Addison ADDISON, Sept. 13 - Dr. Beverly Waugh Briscoe died at his home at Addison, Monday evening, September 6, after an illness extending over a three year period, suffering from a heart condition and complications. He was born near Catonsville, Baltimore County, Md., April 7, 1875, and was aged 68 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was a son of John Augustian and Elizabeth Smithson Metee Briscoe, and was a direct descendent of pioneer settlers of Maryland. He received his early education in the public schools of Baltimore County, and later received training as instructor in education in Baltimore City College. Later he entered the University of Maryland School of Medicine and was graduated in 1903. For six months following his graduation, he was resident physician of Bayview Hospital, Baltimore, resigning to take up the practice of Medicine at Pocahontas. Jan. 6, 1904, while practicing at Pocahontas, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Kaveria Shertzer of Baltimore, who preceded him to the grave on March 15, 1905. To this union was born one child, Mrs. Kaveria Solem, of Washington, D.C. He was again married on June 2, 1907, to Mary M. Yutzy, who, with the following children survive: Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Robert) Goering, West Newton; John Leonard Briscoe, Uniontown, and Mrs. Nelle Grace (David C.) Cronin, Fostoria, Ohio. One daughter, Anita Evangeline, preceded him to the grave about three years ago. Dr. Briscoe was the youngest and last survivor of a family of nine. He was engaged in the practice of medicine for more than 37 years, and during that time practiced at the following places: Pocahontas, Pa., Grantsville and Accident, Md., Markleysburg, Pa., Ridgley, W.Va., and Addison, Pa., the larger part of that period in the Addison community. He was a consistent church and Sunday school worker, and for nearly twenty years was a Sunday school teacher in either Methodist or Lutheran churches in the communities in which he lived. Dr. Briscoe was of the old school of country physicians, always willing and ready to help out the sick and the distressed at all hours of the day or night, and pushed himself without considering his own comfort and health during the long hard winters, to bring help to those in need. Funeral services were conducted at the family home at Addison on Thursday, Sept. 9th, with Rev. James S. Shannon, pastor of the Addison Lutheran Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Mrs. Mary G. Richey of the Addison Methodist Church. Interment in Addison Cemetery, in charge of Harry B. Rishebarger, funeral director.
