MARY M. BRISCOE

  Mrs. Mary Madalene Briscoe, widow of the late Dr. Beverly W. Briscoe, died in 
Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, Monday morning, March 18, at 3:15 o'clock, following 
several major operations.
  Mrs. Briscoe was born at New Germany, Garrett County, Maryland, November 6, 
1879, and was aged 66 years, 4 months and 12 days.  She was a daughter of the 
late Samuel D. and Mary Lepley Yutzy, descendants of pioneer residents of 
Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
  Mary Magdalene Yutzy was united in marriage, June 2, 1907, with Dr. Beverly W. 
Briscoe at Pocahontas, Somerset County, Pa., where Dr. Briscoe was engaged in 
the practice of medicine.
  To Dr. and Mrs. Briscoe were born four children: Mrs. Mary E. (Robert B.) 
Goehring, West Newton; John Leonard Briscoe, Uniontown; Mrs. Nelle G. (David C.) 
Cronin, Savannah, Georgia, and Anita Evangeline Briscoe, who died July 22, 1940.
  Mrs. Briscoe was one of a family of twelve, nine of whom survive.  Surviving 
brothers and sisters are: Allen G. Yutzy, Glencoe; Mrs. Luella Sipple, 
Meyersdale; Charles L. Yutzy, Cumberland, Md.; Mrs. Emma E. Bender and Mrs. Ida 
M. Hershberger, Grantsville; William H. Yutzy, Baltimore; Daniel W. Yutzy, 
Madley, Pa.; Mrs. Nannie Butchers, Lynn Haven, Florida, and Mrs. N. Grace 
Miller, Fostoria, Ohio.  Surviving, also, are two grandchildren, John Richard 
and Barbara Lee Briscoe, Uniontown.
  Mrs. Briscoe was reared in the Pocahontas section of Somerset County, and 
after her marriage moved to Accident, Maryland, where the family resided for 
about six years, moving then to Markleysburg, Fayette County, where Dr. Briscoe 
practiced medicine for about three years, moving from there in 1917 to Addison, 
where the family remained until 1927, when Dr. Briscoe again changed locations, 
moving to Ridgely, Caroline County, Maryland, remaining there until 1931, when 
they returned to the family home at Addison, where Dr. Briscoe passed away, 
Sept. 6, 1943.
  Mrs. Mary Briscoe was a devout Christian, practicing her faith by deeds of 
kindness, and by her pleasant disposition and outstanding character endeared 
herself to everyone who knew her.  She was for many years, a member of St. 
John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Addison and a member of the Women's 
Missionary Society and Sunday School of that Church.
  During the last year she transferred her membership to the Lutheran Church of 
the Reformation at Savannah, Ga., where she expected to make her home with her 
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Cronin.  She became affiliated, 
also, with the Joan Slice Circle, Woman's Missionary Society of that church, 
soon after going to Savannah, and was very active in the work of her church in 
Savannah, as she was in the Addison community.
  Mrs. Briscoe was a friend to everyone who knew her, a kind and loving wife and 
mother, and her passing leaves a void in the lives of many.
  The body was removed to the Rishebarger Funeral Home at Addison, where funeral 
services were conducted on Thursday, March 21st, Rev. Jerome V. Guss of the St. 
John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Addison officiating.  A joint choir, 
composed of members of the Addison Lutheran and Addison Methodist churches, sang 
"What a Friend We Have in Jesus"; "God's Way is the Best Way" and "Have Thine 
Own Way, Lord".  The floral tributes were outstanding, with many huge and 
beautiful baskets and sprays of flowers.  Interment in Addison cemetery, beside 
the body of her late husband, was in charge of H. B. Rishebarger, Addison 
funeral director.  Pallbearers were O.D. Cuppett, T. J. Jacobs, N. L. Diehl, M. 
G. Swope, F. L. Jefferys and Willis Green.
