Mr. Broadwater resigned as postmaster in March because of his failing health, and his condition had been steadily deteriorating since that time. He was hospitalized several times for a week or more in the past six weeks, and had just returned from Hazel McGilvery Hospital on Monday evening preceding his death. The cause of his death was a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Broadwater was born in Garrett County, Maryland, June 11, 1895, son of Samuel E. and Clara (Warnick) Broadwater. He served with Co. C, 317th Machine Gun Battalion in France in World War I and was severely wounded in action; his service extended from May 24, 1918 to November 5, 1918. He was three days short of 55 years in age at his passing. Soon after his discharge from the Army, Mr. Broadwater settled in Salisbury and established himself in the meat business which he conducted successfully until shortly before World War II when he sold out. He returned to meat cutting during the war at the J.C. Lichliter & Co. store because of the shortage of skilled help, and discontinued that occupation to become postmaster in the fall of 1946. He was married to Ethel Pearl Broadwater, who survives, as well as two sons, Forrest E. and Paul Broadwater. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Clara E. Broadwater; one brother, Austin C. Broadwater; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Hoffman, and one grandchild. His father preceded him in death in 1933, as did a daughter, Mildred, in 1929. Mr. Broadwater was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, having transferred within the charge from Trinity Reformed Church in New Germany. He was a member of Meyersdale Lodge No. 554, F. & A.M., Meyersdale; of Hebron Royal Arch Chapter No. 272, Meyersdale; of Uniontown Commandery No. 49, Knights Templar, and of Jaffa Temple Order of the Mystic Shrine, Altoona. He was also a member of Volture No. 609, 40 & 8, Somerset, and a charter member of Earl H. Opel Post No. 459, Salisbury, and the only commander of that post who served two terms. He was a member of Salisbury Lodge No. 982, I.O.O.F. and a past Noble Grand of Salisbury Lodge 401, Improved Order of Red Men and a past Sachem; a member of the Salisbury Lions Club and an honorary member of the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department. He was ????? of the First State Bank of Grantsville, and had served two terms as auditor of Elk Lick Township. Funeral services were conducted in St. John's Reformed Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. Samuel D. Sigler, of Grace Lutheran Church, Du Bois, and the Rev. Ira S. Monn, pastor of St. John's (Reformed) officiated. Interment was made in the IOOF Cemetery, where Masonic rites and the Legion services were conducted by fellow members of Meyersdale Lodge and of Earl H. Opel Post. The services in the church and at the cemetery were largely attended, probably as largely as any such services ever conducted here. Pall bearers were Bayard S. Maust, Hubert L. Newman, David E. Harris, Sr., David Cochrane, Fred H. Petry Jr. and James McClure, all fellow members of Meyersdale Lodge, F. & A.M., and also of Earl H. Opel Post. Honorary pall bearers were Robert H. Johnston, John C. Lichliter, Sr., Simon Marteney, Jonas S. Lichty, Jack Pyle, Francis A. Showalter, Samuel L. Engle and Walter D. Weise. Funeral services were under the direction of Stanley M. Thomas, Salisbury mortician. Meyersdale Republican, June 16, 1949
