BROADWATER Michael A. Broadwater, infant son of Austin M. and Matilda (Hutzell) Broadwater, died Monday, February 23, at 10:30 p.m., in the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, after an illness of only a few hours. Shortly after the child had become ill, he was taken to the hospital where oxygen was administered, but to no avail. At first, the doctors were baffled by the child's sudden and hopeless condition. After death, examination revealed that the cause of death was a rare condition, an enlarged thymus gland, a chest gland prominent in infants, but which normally slowly disappears after the weaning period. Michael, a sweet, laughing baby, had seemed in normal health Monday morning, but by noon developed difficulty in breathing and swallowing. Several weeks ago, the child had a sick spell from which he quickly recovered. The child was 10 months, 15 days old. The bereaved father, Austin Broadwater, is the son of Mrs. James B. Hummel. His stepfather, "Jim" Hummel, owner and proprietor of the Community Market, was greatly attached to the child and always referred to him as "our" baby when talking to his friends and customers. Mr. and Mrs. Hummel left early in February to spend several months in Florida. Owing to weather conditions, they are unable to return for the child's funeral. Funeral services will be held at 2:30, Friday afternoon, at the home with Rev. H. K. Hilner, pastor of the Lutheran church, officiating. Friends are being received at the home on Center Street, above the Community Market. Interment will be made in Union Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, morticians.
