THOMAS OLIN BROADWATER

  Dr. Thomas Olin Broadwater, 56, well known dentist, died Friday, March 26, at 
7 a.m., at the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where he had been a patient since 
Tuesday.  He had been in ill health for some time and his death was due to 
complications.
  Dr. Broadwater, born in Grantsville, April 3, 1891, was the son of the late 
James S. Broadwater and Marian (Frost) Broadwater, and a great grandson of 
Meshack Frost, the founder of Frostburg in 1812. 
  He attended Alleghany High School, Cumberland; St. Johns College, Annapolis 
and was graduated from University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, in 1916.
  He practiced dentistry since 1916 in Grantsville and also had a branch office 
in Friendsville.
  Dr. Broadwater was a member of Ali Ghan Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., and Cumberland 
Consistory; Mountain Lodge No. 99, A.F. and A.M. of Frostburg; American Dental 
Association and Allegany-Garrett Dental Society.  He served six months in the 
Dental Corps in World War I.  He was a member of American Legion Post No. 214.  
He served as financial secretary for Woodmen of the World, Camp No. 41, 
Grantsville, from 1931 to 1947.  He was a past Elk of B.P.O.E., Frostburg, and 
was a Rotarian.  He was an active member of the Grantsville Methodist Church, 
and he served on the Town Council.  Dr. Broadwater was a member of Psi Omega and 
Psi Sigma Kappa fraternities.  While at St. Johns College, he played on the 
Varsity football team.
  Dr. Broadwater married Miss Esther Bender, daughter of Mrs. C. A. Bender and 
the late C. A. Bender of Grantsville, Nov. 17, 1924.
  He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Ethel Broadwater at home, and Marian 
Viola Broadwater, Garrett County teacher; and one brother, Dr. Melvin Frost 
Broadwater, dentist, Frederick, Md.
  Funeral services were conducted from the Misses Ethel and Marian Viola 
Broadwater home, Monday at 2:30 p.m., with the Masons Lodge No. 99 of Frostburg 
officiating, assisted by Rev. D. J. Combs, pastor of Methodist Church, and Rev. 
George Ely, pastor of Evangelical and Reformed Church.
  Members of the American Legion and W.O.W. were flower bearers.
  Rev. D. J. Combs, discoursed on "Briefness of Life", and he brought out three 
points: "Drink to the Cup", "Give the Roses" and "Live the Verses". Rev. George 
Ely's topic was centered on "Faith and Kindness".  Olen Yoder's quartet sang 
"The Streets are Paved with Gold" and "Passing On".
  Interment was in the Salisbury, Pa., Cemetery.
  Dr. Broadwater had a pleasing personality, was kind and friendly and was well 
known both in Maryland and Pennsylvania.  He will be missed by his many friends.
  High tribute was paid to Dr. Broadwater with a room filled with flowers from 
churches, societies, organizations and friends from many states.  Five hundred 
visited the home, including the following relatives and close friends:
