Brocht Crushed to Death World War Veteran Killed by Falling Rock in Mountain Valley Mine Alfred V. Brocht of Garrett met his death by a fall of rock in the Mountain Valley Coal Co. mines near Garrett last Saturday morning. His father was working by his side at the time of the accident which caused almost instant death. Alfred V. Brocht was aged 38 years, 8 months and 27 days, and is survived by his wife and two children, Beulah, age 10, and Junior, aged 7; also by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brocht of Garrett, and a brother, William J., of Parnassus, Pa. He was a World War veteran and member of Charles E. Kelly Post, No. 112, American Legion, of Meyersdale. He served with the A.E.F. in France and saw action in three major engagements. He was a charter member of an American Legion post organized in Garrett soon after the close of the war. This organization disbanded, after several years, and its members united with the post at Meyersdale. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late home of the deceased in Garrett, followed by interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Berlin, by Undertaker W. C. Price. Rev. C. P. Bastian of Berlin conducted the funeral services and the American Legion conducted full military services at the grave. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Garrett. Sixty automobiles were in the funeral procession from Garrett to Berlin. Meyersdale Republican, November 26, 1931
