Brooks, 83, Somerset, died May 13, 2001 at Saint Clair Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 19, 1917 in Connellsville, son of Hess Lewis and Ella Elizabeth (Firestone) Brooks. Preceded in death by parents, wife, the former Verna Grace Allshouse, who died March 27, 1991, and sister, Madeline McDowell. Survived by children, Ms. Jan R. Barnett of Somerset and Mrs. William V. (Bonne) Gurzenda of Somerset; and 3 granddaughters; Heather Barnett, Susan and Frances Gurzenda. Brother of Mrs. Joseph W. (Gladys) Thomas of Upper St. Clair and Jack L. Brooks and wife, Mimi of Silver Spring, Md. Member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. A 1935 graduate of Connellsville High School. Graduate of West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Kappa Signa Fraternity. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was a B-17 navigator and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Owner of Ray E. Brooks Co. of Somerset for 52 years. No viewing or visitation. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset, with the Rev. Keith M. Fink officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park.
