Brown, a native of West Virginia, but for many years a resident of Salisbury, Pa., died in the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, Meyersdale, Pa., Friday, March 29, 1940, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 12 days. He was badly afflicted by a chronic catarrhal trouble for some years, but being a large, strong man with an unusual tenacity of life, he might have lived considerably longer had it not been that he fell down a flight of 14 steps a few days prior to his death. County Coroner F. E. Sass of Boswell, Pa. pronounced Mr. Brown's death as accidental, and gave it as his opinion that the shock of the fall was the immediate cause of the aged man's death. He was a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Romesburg Brown, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Clara Glotfelty, born and reared near Salisbury, and their eldest daughter, Mrs. Della B. Caldwell. He is survived by one daughter, Grace, the wife of Captain Ralph Smith of New York City, who for more than a score of years has sailed the seas, both as a captain and as pilot of freighting vessels. The captain is also a former resident of Salisbury. Some time after the death of Mr. Brown's wife and eldest daughter, he disposed of his home and most of his personal effects, and knowing how hard it is for persons who have lived to old age in rural communities to adjust themselves to city environments, Mr. Brown expressed a desire to live the remainder of his life where he could often see many of his old friends. Mrs. Smith, therefore, got him a good rooming place in Grantsville, Md., where old friends from Salisbury and other nearby communities in both Pennsylvania and Maryland often saw him, and where he was apparently well contented, and often visited by friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, in Salisbury, of which Mr. Brown was a faithful member. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. M. Wright. The burial arrangements were in charge of W. C. Price, mortician, of Meyersdale, with interment in the Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, April 4, 1940
