Brown, 81, Confluence, died Sept. 20, 1987, at the WVU Medical Center, Morgantown, W.Va. Born April 26, 1906, in Ohiopyle, a daughter of the late George A. and Lucy M. (Hall) Kurtz. A teacher for 46 years in the Confluence area, she was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, L.C.W., the Women's Civic Club, Confluence Senior Citizens, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Order of the Eastern Star. She received the Valley Forge Freedom Award in 1964 for her outstanding work in establishing special education programs. Preceded in death by her former husband, Ellsworth A. Van Sickel; brothers, Daniel and Harry; and sisters, Faye Voss, Lucille Shunk and Jo McLean. She is survived by her husband, J. Robert Brown; sisters: Jean Wilson of Lynchburg, Va.; Anna Hughes and Mary Lane Kurtz, both of Confluence; and eight nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, from 7-9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with Vicar Christine Zander and the Rev. Daryl Harclerode officiating. Interment, Ursina Cemetery. An Eastern Star service will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends donate to favorite charity. Daily American, September 22, 1987 [B2957]
