James Burns Jr., 79, 3428 Warm Spring, Chambersburg, died Nov. 1, 2004, in his home. Born June 3, 1925, he is a son of the late James Sr. and Edith Blanch Bohn Burns. He also is preceded in death by daughter, Suzanne Burns McCann and six brothers. He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Beard Burns, whom he married August 23, 1947; children Sharon Burns Shaffer and husband Charles, Stoystown; Edwin J. Burns and wife Vera Burinda Burns, Saltsburg; Kathie Burns Beabes and husband Daniel, Windber; and Mary C. Burns Sandusky and friend David Devroy of Central City; 14 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and son-in-law Richard McCann, Windber. He served as a Deputy Game Protector from 1947-1956. He graduated on June 30, 1956, with the eighth class of the Ross Leffler School of Conservation, and was employed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission from 1956 until 1985. He served as District Game Protector in Armstrong County, Cambria County, and for 30 years in Somerset County prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Greater Johnstown Lodge 538 F & AM, Jaffa Shriners of Altoona and Johnstown, International Association Legion of Honor, Scottish Rite Club, Harrisburg Consistory, AAONMS of Altoona, AFSCME Retiree Program, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 98, Central City Sportsman and Shade Sportsman Club, Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania (COPA) and the Somerset County Sportsmen Federation. He was a life member of the Jennerstown Sportsman Club. He was an Honorary Game Protector for the state of Pennsylvania. Visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday from noon to 1 p.m., the hour of service in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate. Interment with military honors by Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Daily American, November 3, 2004
