Byrd, 70, negro, Frostburg chiropractor for 24 years, died in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, at 10:55 o'clock last Monday night. He had been a patient there since January 11. Dr. Byrd practiced as a chiropractor for 35 years and was one of the first to be licensed in Maryland when the legislature created a board of examiners for chiropractors in 1920. Before moving to Frostburg, Dr. Byrd practiced in Meyersdale, where he made a circuit of the various nearby communities. He came to Meyersdale from West Virginia. He moved from here to Frostburg, owing to Maryland's more liberal laws governing the practice of non-medical healing methods. He had a lucrative practice here, but was not allowed by law to charge a fee for his services. His patients remunerated him by giving him such gratuities as they saw fit, usually one dollar per treatment. Dr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marthy Byrd. Both were very highly respected citizens during their residence in Meyersdale. They had no children. Meyersdale Republican, January 27, 1944
