Mr. Byrne and his wife, Mrs. Nelle (Beal) Byrne, were residents of Markleysburg, but he had stopped at the Speedway Inn at Hopwood the night of the accident. He was admitted to the Uniontown Hospital on the morning of August 30, after he told friends he was struck by a hit-run driver. Mr. Byrne suffered a fractured hip and wrist and was said to be well on the way to recovery when stricken with pneumonia which resulted in his death last Friday afternoon. Fayette County authorities are investigating the accident which caused Byrne's death. Attorney Byrne was born in Everson in March, 1881, a son of Mrs. John R. Byrne and the late Mr. Byrne. He attended the public schools in Everson and began his legal education in St. Vincent's College and Northwestern University where he took the pre-law course. He was graduated from the University of Michigan law school. He served as chief clerk in the office of Sheriff P. A. John in 1908 and was admitted to practice before the Fayette County bar on May 23, 1911, beginning a brilliant career. He served as assistant district attorney under the late District Attorney William A. Miller from 1920 to 1923 and later served three years in the same capacity under District Attorney James A. Reilly, beginning in 1936. He was author of the law book, "Pennsylvania Criminal Procedure", a volume widely used in legal circles.
