March 26, 1923 - April 21, 2000 John Jacob Carbaugh, Jr., 77, of Thurmont, Md., died April 21, 2000, at his home. He and his wife celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary April 8. Born on March 26, 1923, in Thurmont, he was a son of the late John Jacob Carbaugh, Sr., and Grace May Morningstar Carbaugh. Mr. Carbaugh was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Utica, Md., for some 60 years and was active in a variety of church activities. He was a gifted mechanic retired from Ceresville Ford New Holland, Inc., after 32 plus years of employment. He was an Army veteran of World War II and an active participant in the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach. He was wounded in action and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the 29th Division Association of Frederick, and the American Legion, Post #168, Thurmont. Mr. Carbaugh shared his mechanical abilities with his friends, neighbors and local farmers, repairing farm machinery. For relaxation, he enjoyed gardening, various crafts, and especially playing with his six cats and one dog. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children: John Steven Carbaugh and wife, Margaret A., of Fishkill, N.Y.; Walter Francis Carbaugh and wife, Marie, of San Jose, Calif.; and Olive May Misener of Thurmont; and five step-children: Terri Lynne Higgins of Richmond, Va.; Cynthia Elaine Powell of Duluth, Ga.; and Leslie Kae Wetzel, Laurie Daiane Heims and Brandi Nicole Heims, all of Thurmont. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, James and William, Carbaugh; three sisters: Julie Titman, Mary Ellen and Pat Beall, all of Thurmont; nine grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Elizabeth Carbaugh; a son, Woodrow F. Carbaugh; and a daughter, Grace Bowers. The family received friends April 25 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, Thurmont, Md. Services were held April 27 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Utica, Md., with Rev. Bob McEllroy III officiating. Interment, church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702; or the American Cancer Society, Frederick County Unit, 1011 E.
