He was born in Hancock, Md, May 11, 1871, and had been in failing health the last year, and was bedfast since last Christmas. He was engaged in newspaper work about 58 years of the nearly 74 years of his life, beginning as a correspondent of country weeklies at the age of 16. He became editor, publisher and owner of the Hancock weekly Star before he was 21 years old. In 1893 he became city editor of the Hagerstown Morning Herald and in 1896 he came to Cumberland and was city editor of the Daily News for eighteen years, and about 28 years ago joined the editorial staff of the Evening Times as city editor, which position he resigned last May, owing to failing health. At one time he was correspondent for at least twenty metropolitan papers, and for fifty years sent most of the news that went from Cumberland to Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and other metropolitan papers. He had a wide circle of friends and was among the best informed men on local affairs and history in Western Maryland and the tri-state area adjacent to Cumberland. The veteran editor had one of the largest collections pertaining to local history, including nearby West Virginia and Pennsylvania. His more than forty scrapbooks cover an almost unlimited variety of subjects. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, a granddaughter and three brothers. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland and was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, March 29, 1945
