Dr. Carney was pastor of the Garrett Lutheran Church for fifteen years and lived in the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church parsonage during his pastorate. He was well known by the older residents of southern Somerset County. Dr. Carney, who died in Bellevue Hospital, New York, late Friday after a major operation, was born at Belleville, Mifflin County, in 1870. He was a graduate of the Millersville State Teachers' College, Gettysburg College and Susquehanna University. He also received the degree of doctor of philosophy from Columbia University. He taught school for a number of years before entering the ministry. After he resigned as pastor of the Garrett Lutheran charge, he went to DuBois where he served as pastor of the Lutheran Church for several years. From DuBois, he went to Staten Island where he lived until his death. He was president of Hartwich Seminary, Hartwich, N.Y. Eight years ago, he became pastor of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Brighton, Staten Island. He was not only a teacher and preacher but a writer as well, author of the history of the Allegheny Lutheran Synod, and an anthology called the "Lutheran Lyrics". At the time of his death, he was working on a second volume of poems. During his pastorate with the Garrett Charge, 1904-18, the present Garrett and Pine Hill church buildings were erected. During his funeral services, June 13, the church mortgage of his final pastorage was burned before the coffin. Masonic services were held prior to Sunday's funeral service by Beacon Light Masonic Lodge, acting for the Meyersdale Lodge of which the Rev. Mr. Carney was a member.
