Born Jan. 9, 1933, in Clarksboro, N.J., son of William and Wealthy Chapman. Preceded in death by parents; infant son, Carl; brothers, Phillip, Douglas and Henry; and sisters, Mary, Martha and Lizzie. Survived by wife, of nearly 20 years, the former Jane Williamson; and children, Georgette, married to Peter Phillips, Wynnewood; Berkeley, at home; and Anthony, Pittsburgh; and grandson Colin Poindexter; brother, William, Mount Royal, N.J.; sisters, Lula Carr and Dorothy Chapman, both of Philadelphia; and Alice Cartham, Paulsboro, N.J.; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was raised in Mount Royal, N.J., where he graduated from Swedesboro High School. He then graduated from Morgan State University, Baltimore, on a full football scholarship. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve, he moved to Somerset in 1957. He retired as director of social services with the Somerset County Assistance Office. A former Somerset County Jury Commissioner and Somerset Borough Councilman. Owner/operator of Chapman Personnel Agency and Maid for Everyone Cleaning Service. He later operated Omega Coins in Somerset. A secretary of Somerset County Coin Club. Served on the Somerset Borough Civil Service commission. Member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset, and the Drug and Alcohol Commissions Task Force. He served in all offices of the Somerset Kiwanis Club and was lieutenant governor for District 10. He was an avid sports fan and devoted 20 years of service as a PIAA official, where he was a referee for basketball and football games. He especially loved all things Notre Dame, listening to doo-wop and jazz music and flower gardening. He was a devoted husband and father. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset. The Rev. Keith Fink officiating. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Davidsville.
