Charles, optometrist, 84, Elizabethtown, formerly of Indian Lake and Monongahela, died Sept. 30 2005, at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born Dec. 11, 1920, in Donora, son of the late Christian and Helen Grim Charles. Husband of Ann Pyle Charles. They were married for 54 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Carol Charles, wife of Jim Russell, Seattle, Wash., and Barbara Charles, Pittsburgh; son, Chris Charles, North Huntingdon, a granddaughter, Leah Charles, US Army, Iraq, and two sisters, Louise George, Mount Vernon, Mo. and Sally Giles, Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Charles was a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. Member of Sell Chapel, Masonic Village and formerly a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was also a member of Tri County Lodge 643, F&AM. A past president of Donora Rotary, he was a member of Monongahela Area Rotary. Dr. Charles was a member and past president of Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce, Monongahela School Board, Western Pennsylvania Optometric Society and the Monongahela Area Library Association, where he led fundraising and development for construction of the new library. In 1989, he received the 22nd annual Congressional Award for Distinguished and Dedicated Service to the Community, State and Nation. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Friends may call at the chapel from noon until the time of service. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
