He was born June 30, 1928 in Portage, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Lehan Chobany. Preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Yacos, Elizabeth Havrilak, Julia Giroud and Anna Zsidian. On Nov. 1, 1958, he married Dolores Kipila. Mrs. Chobany died Dec. 10, 1997. Surviving are four sons, John, Rodney, Matthew and Alexander Chobany; two daughters, Deborah Chobany and Tamara Suwak; four brothers, Joseph, George, Andrew and William Chobany; two sisters, Barbara Oleynik and Catherine McCracken; four grandchildren, Anastasia, Christian Kanoa, Melia and Mariah Chobany, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Chobany was a deacon at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church. Mr. Chobany graduated from Portage High School, Indiana University of Pa. and obtained his master's degree in education. He retired from the Burgettstown School District as superintendent and was also previously the superintendent of the Conemaugh Township School District and served as principal at Berlin-Brothersvalley School and he also taught at Laurel Valley School. Mr. Chobany was a World War II veteran, serving in Japan with the United States Army. Daily American, June 3, 2000 [C0347]
