(Byers) Clapper, 77, of Meyersdale died Jan. 25, 2001 at Meyersdale Medical Center. Born June 2, 1923 in Meyersdale. A daughter of the late Harry W. and C. Elizabeth (Habel) Byers. Also preceded in death by her brother H. Willard Byers. Survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert G. Clapper, and three children: David B. Clapper, and his wife Sharon, Meyersdale; Jon C. Clapper and his wife Sharon, Meyersdale, and Kim Marie, wife of E.J. Woody Miller, Evergreen, Colo. Also survived by four grandchildren: Joshua, Jude and his wife Andrea, Jessica and Jon Gabriel. A sister of Blaine Byers and John Byers, both of Las Cruces, N.M.; Una Lichty, Meyersdale, Louise Phillippi and Ferne Kinter, both of Rockwood. A member of the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, Doris was recognized in many ways and was well known for her community service activities. She worked to raise funds to create the Meyersdale Hospital. She was a past president and director for many years of the Maple Festival Quilt Show. She received citizen of the year awards from the Meyersdale Rotary Club and the Meyersdale Lions Club. The Talus Rock Girl Scout Council recognized her 30 years of service to Girl Scouting with the Juliette Low award, the highest award given in Girl Scouting. She worked diligently to create opportunities for senior citizens, in the creations of the Senior Center, the creation of a senior citizens day to the Maple Festival and in organizing tours and day trips. She was a director on the Somerset Area Agency on Aging board as well as the Somerset State Hospital. Doris was the president and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Unit of the WBCCL Airstream unit. She served the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren as treasurer for more than 25 years. Doris Clapper will be remembered for her unique ability to make everyone she met feel special. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale. Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Emory Scholl and the Rev. Mike Swick officiating. Interment, Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
