Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Newburgh, N.Y., a son of the late Edward Warren Cleeves and Clara Duppstadt Cleeves. The family later moved to Somerset. He is also preceded in death by a brother William Duppstadt Cleeves. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Laura Rankin Cleeves; children Nellie Jane Laxton and husband, William; William Lawrence Cleeves and wife, Candace; three grandchildren, Katherine, Margaret and William Laxton and wife, Allison. Brother of Mary Cleeves Dawson of Boston, Mass. Mr. Cleeves graduated from Somerset High School. In 1935, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Ceramic Engineering. He later earned a degree in Meteorology as an Army Air Corps Cadet at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Cleeves served during World War II in the Army Air Corps as a meteorologist in China, India and Burma. During the Korean War, Capt. Cleeves served in South Korea and Japan. Mr. Cleeves was employed by NOAA in Cincinnati and transferred to Durham, N.C., in 1967 as an EPA meteorologist. He retired in 1973. Mr. Cleeves was a member of Duke Memorial Methodist Church where he was a member of the Spence-Kale Bible Class. George, a lifelong outdoorsman, is remembered for his good nature, humor, and intelligence. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Duke Memorial Methodist Church. There will be a reception in the church parlor following the service.
