Born Dec. 27, 1935, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Iola Elizabeth (Close) Shaffer. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Muriel Close, who also preceded him in death. Mr. Close is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth Ellen (Chaney) Close, whom he married August 27, 1955; children, Jerry L. and wife Debbie (Divelbiss), Hyndman; Mary "Peanut" Miller and husband Robert, Warminster; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, Woodrow Shaffer and wife Peggy, Martinsburg, W.Va., and Kenny Shaffer, Meyersdale; sisters, Joyce Holler and husband James, Wiley Ford, W.Va., and Darlene Lowery and Elaine Shaffer, both of Hyndman. Mr. Close was the owner/operator of Dick's Garage, Hyndman, from 1977 until 1991. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hyndman. He was active in the Hyndman-Londonderry Lion's Club. He was also an avid bowler. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman where funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. David L. Klink officiating. Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery.
