All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ ELDRIDGE MARCELLUS CODDINGTON Garrett County, Maryland Eldridge Marcellus Coddington, life-long resident of Garrett County, died at his home at Friendsville, Friday afternoon, April 4, after an illness of many months. While hope for his recovery had been abandoned several months ago, nevertheless his death came as a shock to his family and many friends in his community. Mr. Coddington was born at Friendsville June 30, 1869 and was aged 71 years, 9 months and 4 days at the time of his demise. He was a son of the late William A. and Rebecca Anne Coddington, natives of the county. He had spent his entire life in the Friendsville community. On May 5, 1898 he married Addie Friend, who came to Friendsville from West Virginia in her early girlhood. They were the parents of twelve children, nine of whom survive: Mrs. Grace Warnick, Grantsville; Mrs. Florence Porter, Silver Springs, Md.; Mrs. Dora Wells, Cabin John Park, Md.; James W. Coddington, Berwin, Md.; B. Franklin Coddington, George Coddington, Anna Marie Coddington and Robert E. Coddington, Washington, D.C., and R. Richard Coddington, Friendsville. One sister, Mrs. Lillian B. Ryland, Friendsville, and two brothers, Ross R. Coddington, Niagara Falls, N.Y., and William Lee Coddington, Baltimore, also survive. At an early age Mr. Coddington became a member of the Christian church at Friendsville and took an active interest in the work of this organization. He was ordained as a Deacon and served in this capacity for a number of years. He also served as a member of the town council and was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 73. Funeral services were conducted from the Friendsville Christian Church Sunday afternoon, April 6, by the Rev. Mr. Nelle. A group composed of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Murphy, Mrs. Edward Rose, Joseph Mathews and Mesback Castell. Friendsville, and F. F. Guard, Markleysburg, sang several hymns. All were friends of Mr. Coddington and his family. Pallbearers were William Frazee, Alex Groves, Milton Forsyth, Ray Litel, Orville Jenkins and Donald Chisholm. Interment was in the Friendsville cemetery under the supervision of W. W. Savage, mortician. All of Mr. Coddington's children came to attend the services. Others who came from a distance to pay their last respects were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Ryland, Campbell Ryland, Mrs. Katheryn Jones, Washington D. C., Mrs. W. I. Pace, Georgetown, Del., Mrs. Amber Rexroad, Thomas, W.Va., Mrs. S. R. Friend and R. T. Friend, Davis, W.Va. Meyersdale Republican, April 10, 1941
