The tragedy happened in front of the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Wyand, whom he was going to visit. Andrew Horchner, Jr., of Meyersdale, was approaching the scene of the tragedy in his own car and witnessed a car approaching from the opposite direction hit the aged man and knock him off the paved road. The "death car" was traveling from Berlin toward Roxbury. Horchner was traveling from Roxbury to Berlin. Young Horchner continued a short distance to East End Berlin, where he could turn around and go back, to see if he could render aid. Meanwhile, the hit and run car had disappeared without coming to a halt. Coleman was tossed on the eastern berm of the highway, where Horchner found him. The victim was carried into the Wyant home, where he was pronounced dead by Berlin doctors who were summoned by phone. Death was attributed to compound fractures of both legs, a dislocation of the right shoulder, a crushed chest and a possible fracture of the skull. The right ear was torn off. A few pieces of broken metal believed to have been broken off the car which struck Coleman are vital clues by which officers hope to trace the hit and run driver. Lewis Albert Coleman was born August 1, 1865. His wife, Annie (Hittie) Coleman passed away in 1900. Surviving are a son, John Coleman, and a daughter, Mrs. Ada Weyand, both of Brothersvalley Township. Mr. Coleman had been making his home at the residences of his children, alternatively. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon in Hay's Reformed Church, with Rev. Dr. D. S. Stephan, pastor of Trinity Reformed Church in Berlin, and Rev. F. D. Witmer, Mt. Zion charge pastor, officiating. Interment in the church cemetery, under the direction of J. N. Johnson and Son, Berlin morticians. Meyersdale Republican, November 28, 1940
