Collins, 84, former well know businessman of Meyersdale, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 7, at his home in Altoona, after a long illness. He suffered pneumonia about a week, which caused his death. He was born in Frostburg, Md., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson Collins, who later moved to Meyersdale, where Johnson Collins purchased a half interest in the clothing business of Norman E. Miller. Under the name of Miller & Collins they built up a large dry goods department store. George W. succeeded to the interests of his father in the firm. During his partnership with N. E. Miller, the store was the largest store of its kind in Somerset County. Mr. Collins retired from business in July 1927, selling his interest in the business to Norman E. Miller & Son. In 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Collins sold their residence on North Street and moved to Altoona to be with their daughters, Helen and Lenore. George Collins was married to Sue Kalbaugh of Piedmont, W.Va. Mrs. Collins and the following children survive: Mrs. Hugh McFarland, Topeka, Kans.; Mrs. Frank Miller, Altoona; Mrs. Ed Weinike, Baltimore; Lenore, at home; George W. Jr., and Jack, Baltimore. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Homer Hartley of Beaver. A brother, Frank Collins, Beaver, and a sister, Mrs. George Hocking, Meyersdale, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held in Altoona this (Thursday) evening. The body will be brought here for burial in Union Cemetery at 11 o'clock Friday morning, under the direction of W. C. Price & Son. Meyersdale Republican, December 9, 1948
