Born Sept. 28, 1912, in Garrett, he was the son of the late Joseph and Helena (Ostank) Commotes who migrated to America from Austria at the turn of the century. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Norma (Ebaugh) Commotes, and one son, Roger E. Commotes, both of Cumberland, Md. Joseph was a member of Beachdale Church of the Brethren, United Mine Workers of America Local 1875, the Sovene National Benefit Society and several fraternal and sportsmen's organizations. He was also a former member of Garrett Volunteer Fire Department. Joe was an honest, hard-working man who was most at home in the great outdoors, an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed going with his fishing buddies to Canada, the Outerbanks, Lake Erie and Maryland's Eastern Shore. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. At his request, the body will be cremated with no visitation. Daily American, November 28, 1995 [C0789]
