Cook, died at her home with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. H. Dalton Cook, 312 Broadway, at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at the age of 89 years, 4 months, 12 days. She was born May 25, 1855, and was the fourth child and second daughter of Edwin and Nancy (Lepley) Deal, who were the parents of 16 children, all of whom grew to maturity, but only five of whom now survive, namely Simon Deal, Elkins, W.Va.; Calvin E. Deal, LaVale, Md.; Mrs. D. P. Ford, Cumberland, Md.; Mrs. George Caler, Deal, Pa., and Miss Agnes Deal, Meyersdale. Her husband, founder of the well known J. M. Cook & Son's Co. wholesale candy factory and confectionery business in Meyersdale, died Aug. 7, 1936. Their only son, H. Dalton Cook, who was his father's business associate, in the confectionery business, was killed in 1916, when his car was struck by a locomotive on a grade crossing of a railroad at Madley in Bedford County, Pa., while he was on a sales trip. During her widowhood and old age, Mother Cook was cared for by her son's widow, Mrs. Stella (Peck) Cook. She was in feeble health the last few years, but until recently was not confined to her bed. Her death came very gradually and was attributed to infirmities due to old age. Surviving the aged lady, besides the brothers and sisters above named and her daughter-in-law, are: A foster daughter, Miss Susan Brensinger, four grandchildren - Lt. James Cook, Navy; Paul Cook, Baltimore; Mrs. Mary Cook Hahn, Baltimore, and Miss Kathryn Cook, U.S. Army hostess, Indiantown Gap. One grandson, Dalton Cook, Jr., died some years ago. Surviving also are five great- grandchildren. Matilda Deal Cook was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and very active in all of the church as long as her health permitted. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Cook home by her pastor, Rev. R. M. Dunkelberger, D.D., followed by interment in Union Cemetery under direction of W. C. Price & Son.
