Born in Ashcom, Bedford County, he was the son of the late Philip A. and Lydia A. (Forman) Cornell. He was preceded in death by his first wife Helen (Miller) Cornell, three brothers, John, Albert "Todd", and Philip, Jr., and a sister, Anna Louise. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Connie (Miller) Steach, Bedford; daughter Dorothy "Dot," wife of Terry Wyles, Everett, son Gregory, husband of Sharon (Shirley) Cornell, Berlin; son William, widower of Annette (Schrieber) Cornell, New Baltimore; son James, husband of Lisha (Calhoun) Cornell, Everett; daughter Roberta "Bertie," wife of Orville Koontz Jr., Everett; daughter Brenda, wife of Orvil Davis, Clearville; daughter Mary Beth, wife of William Motter, Bedford; brother, Melvin Cornell, husband of Virginia, Schellsburg; brother Floyd Cornell, husband of Freda, Bedford; brother Clarence Cornell, Everett; sister to Betty Lou, wife of Floyd Clark, Everett; sister Helen, wife of Harry Ritchey, Everett; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was a heavy equipment operator at New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. Ashcom Plant for 43 years and retired in 1986. He was the husband of Dora Mae (Shippy) Cornell, whom he married on August 21, 1952, in Cumberland, Md. He was affiliated with Pleasant Union Church, Clearville. He served in World War II as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, 69th Division. He was stationed in central Europe. He was a member of the American Legion Post 113, Bedford; Improved Order of Redman Tribe 507, Everett; Bedford Moose Lodge 480; Schellsburg VFW Post 4440; Eagles Club, Somerset; New Baltimore Sportsmans Club; Teamsters Local 453, Cumberland, Md. Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Louis Geisel Funeral Home, Bedford, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Lyle Mellott officiating.
