He was born on April 13, 1919, in Uniontown, a son of Carl E. and Anne (Moser) Cornish. His parents and nephew, Carl Seigle, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Frances Lucille Magda-Cornish; his son, John M. Cornish II, Ed.D., and wife Carolyn Sue Kartesz-Cornish, Ed.D, Bethlehem; his sister, Lavina Ann Cornish-Seigle, Denver; his nephew, Bernard N. Seigle, Denver; a sister-in-law, Velma Lamance, Lemont Furnace; and numerous nieces and nephews. He resided in historic Somerfield, current site of Youghiogheny Reservoir and Route 40 bridge, where his parents owned and operated the Cornish Arm's Hotel. John was a graduate of Confluence High School and Valley Forge Military Academy. He also attended West Virginia University and Franklin School of Science. He was a major in the United States Army and served his country proudly during World War II. He was the commanding officer of Fort Greely, Alaska, and a member of the Uniontown VFW Post 47. He had been employed in sales at commercial service, McKeesport. John was the founder of "Captain Jack's" Lakeside Marine and Enterprises on the Youghiogheny Lake, Addison, for 40 years, which he operated from 1952 until 1992. He also organized the Castaway Yacht Club of the Youghiogheny Reservoir. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and until 11 a.m. Friday, when a blessing service will be held in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home Inc., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown. The Rev. Mark Eckman of St. Sylvester's Church, Pittsburgh, officiating. Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, where military honors will be accorded by VFW 47, Uniontown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Sisters of Divine Providence, 900 Bobcreek Blvd., Allison Park, PA 15101, or to the American Cancer Society.
