Courtney, 86, Somerset, died Jan. 24, 1987, Somerset Community Hospital. Born May 11, 1900, in Connellsville, the son of the late James S. and Janie M. (Johnson) Courtney. Survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Burleigh; these children: Graham, Fox Chapel; Attorney James O. Jr., Somerset; Dr. William B., Greensburg; Louise T. Courtney, Philadelphia; and Mrs. John R. (Dorothy B.) Howell, of Bethlehem; 14 grandchildren; brother, Edward A. of Mt. Lebanon. He was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, served as elder for 40 years; Somerset County Bar Association; Somerset Lions Club; partner in Courtney and Courtney Law Firm. Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and University of Pittsburgh Law School. He served on the board of education of Somerset for 12 years. Also served on the Selective Service Board of Somerset County during World War II. Past chairman of the Somerset County Chapter of the American Red Cross; executive board of the Robert E. Perry Council of Boy Scouts. Friends received Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Douglas Rehberg officiating. Private interment, Husband Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions may be made to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, Somerset.
