COVER Sudden Passing of Deputy Cover Veteran Authority on Court House Records Died at Age of 82 James M. Cover, 82, passed away in the Somerset Community Hospital Tuesday evening, May 21, following a brief illness. He was admitted to the hospital May 18, following a heart attack. He had been suffering from a heart ailment for a number of years. Born at Davidsville, January 12, 1858, a son of Silas J. and Sophia Cover, Mr. Cover in early manhood removed to Jenner Cross Roads where he purchased the merchantile establishment of the late Edmund Kiernan. It was there he met and married Miss Rebecca Gallagher, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gallagher, prominent residents of that community. He was elected and served a term as Register and Recorder of Somerset County and then accepted the position as cashier of a bank at Rockwood, where he and his family resided for a number of years, later returning to Somerset. Mr. Cover also filled the position of a state bank examiner and was chief clerk at Cumberland, Maryland, to the late John C. Brydon, coal administrator during the World War. An expert accountant, Mr. Cover was perhaps the most outstanding authority on the court house records and often was called upon to assist in various capacities. Since the first of January he had been Deputy Recorder of Deeds in the office of Recorder Eugene C. Hostetler. Always prominent in Masonic activities, Mr. Cover was the second oldest Past Master of the Somerset lodge, and also a member of the higher orders of that fraternity, and of Trinity Lutheran Church. His wife passed away ten years ago and he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Cook, of Rochester, New York, and Mrs. W. Curtis Truxal of Somerset, and one granddaughter, Mrs. J. M. Schuthman, also of Rochester. Funeral services were held at the Hauger Funeral Home, Thursday afternoon. Meyersdale Republican, May 30, 1940
