Born Jan. 30, 1922, in Somerset Township. Son of the late John Earle and Marion Vesta (Geary) Critchfield. Preceded in death by wife, the former Hazel Rae Etter, on May 13, 1991, and brother, Dr. John Geary Critchfield. Survived by stepchildren: Richard W. Mackey, married to the former Lois Oliver of Chambersburg, and Peggy Ann, wife of John R. Shaw of Downingtown, Pa. Also 7 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren. Brother of Emma Louise Critchfield of Somerset and Robert Wesley Critchfield, married to the former Audrey Lang, of Latrobe. Survived by niece, Helen Marian Critchfield of Latrobe. Retired Civil Engineer and was former general superintendent from 1947-1963 for the C.J. Langenfelder Construction Co. of Baltimore, Md., and general superintendent from 1963 until retirement in 1989 for the W.C. Dickerson Construction Co. of Youngwood. 1940 graduate of Somerset High School and received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering. World War II veteran of U.S. Coast Guard. Life member of Sipesville Church of Brethren. Member of George Washington Lodge 143, F. & A.M.; and the Harrisburg Consistory. Member of American Legion Post 181 and the Disabled American Veterans Association. Life member of Pennsylvania Professional Civil Engineers Association. Also member of Flood City Fraternal Order of Police, Somerset Grange, Roxbury Sportmen's Association, National Rifle Association, Pennsylvania Wool Growers Association. He had designed many of the bridges in the Johnstown area, including the McNally Bridge on Route 219. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Danny R. Bailey officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. Masonic service 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
