Critchfield, 59, of Willmar, Minn., died Nov. 5, 1995, at his home following extended illness. Born Sept. 14, 1936, at Somerset, the son of the late Sarah (Wisman) and James A. Critchfield. He is survived by his wife, Gail; two daughters, Cara and Leah Critchfield of Minneapolis, besides other relatives. He grew up in Gary, Ind., and graduated from Emerson High School there. Served in the U.S. Navy overseas during the Korean conflict. Later he graduated from Indiana University and received his master's degree from Ball State University. Later he received his teaching credentials from the University at St. Thomas. He taught school in Salt Lake City, and at West High School in Minneapolis. On Nov. 26, 1969, in Excelsior, he was married to Gail S. Dyer. He taught school in the Robbinsdale district and in 1979, moved to Willmar. Since then he was a teacher at the Adolescent Unit at the Willmar Regional Treatment Center and coached swimming and diving for the Willmar swimming teams. Member of the Masonic Lodge, the Zuhrah Shrine Temple, the Drum and Bugle Corps of the Zuhrah Shrine Temple. A past master of the Masonic Lodge, and a district representative for the Masons, and received the Hirim Award last month. He was voted the Coach of the Year last month. He was voted the Coach of the Year for Willmar High School teams in 1989 and 1995. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Steve Knutson officiating. Interment, Fairview Cemetery. A public Masonic service under the auspices of Sharon Lodge 104, A.F. & A.M. will be held on Wednesday 7 p.m. at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at the church prior to the services. Memorials to the Rice Hospice, Masonic Diabetic Youth Fund or the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital are preferred. Daily American, November 8, 1995 [C1196]
