Bob was born Feb. 8, 1937, in Somerset Township, the son of the late John Earle and Marian Vesta Geary Critchfield. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. J. Geary Critchfield and Harold Samuel Critchfield and a sister, Emma Louise Critchfield. Survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Audrey Lang Critchfield and his loving daughter, Helen Marian Critchfield. Bob graduated from Somerset Joint High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in comprehensive science from Indiana University of Pa. He earned a master's degree in education administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He did additional graduate studies at the University of New Hampshire, Penn State University, the University of Pa. and the University of Pittsburgh. Bob began his career as a professional educator in the Harbrack School District. He also taught in the Shanksville-Stonycreek School District, as well as the Somerset Area School District. He served as principal of the Oil City Junior High School. He served as assistant superintendent of the Derry Area School District from 1971 through 1985. In 1985, he was appointed superintendent of the Derry Area Schools and served in that position until his retirement in February 1999, bringing to a close a 40 plus year career as a professional educator. In 1962, he was selected the Science Educator of the State. He was a member of the F&MA Oil City Masonic Lodge, the Coudersport Consistory and the Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Latrobe United Methodist Church. He held memberships in Phi Delta Kappa, Latrobe Elks BPOE 907, Mountain Field & Stream Hunt Club, Kingston Vets and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid outdoorsman, having hunted and fished in numerous western states, Canada and Newfoundland. He enjoyed camping, NASCAR, riding his ATV and off-road four-wheeling. He served on numerous committees for the Intermediate Unit as well as the PADE. He was a member of DARE and a board member of Adams Memorial Library. Friends were received Monday and will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the McCabe Funeral Home, 300 W. Third Ave., Derry, where services will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Aimee W. Twigg and the Rev. Kenneth McGowan co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Somerset County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Latrobe United Methodist Church, 440 Main St., Latrobe, PA 15650 or the Caldwell Memorial Library, 982 N. Chestnut St. Ext., Derry, PA 15627. LaMonte Lodge 568 F&AM of Derry will conduct Masonic Services 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Funeral Home.
