Croyle, 81, of Stoystown died Aug. 16, 2000 at Somerset Hospital. Born April 23, 1919 in Quemahoning Township. Son of Jesse and Emma (Lohr) Croyle. Preceded in death by parents, sister Martha Miller, brothers; Fred, Cliff and Paul. Survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Esther Horner, these children: Karen married to Ronald Yoffe of Grand Rapids, Mich., Brenda married to Charles Shontofski and Douglas married to former Kathy Sheets, both of Stoystown, and grandsons Adam Yoffe, Devin and Aaron Croyle, Sgt. Matthew Shontofski married to former Vicki Gallucci and H. N. Daniel Shontofki. He was a graduate of the former Stoystown High School and a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II where he served as a B-24 pilot flying 31 missions as a weather reconnaissance pilot in the South Pacific. Also, during the bombing of Tokyo, he received an air medal with one oak leaf cluster. After the war, he flew as a crop duster for Del Monte Foods in Illinois and Wisconsin. After returning home, he worked as a heavy equipment operator for several local strip mining operations. He was a member of Stoystown American Legion Post #257 and 13 Star VFW Post #7565, in Hooversville. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Paul E. Claycomb officiating. Interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown. Legion service will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
