"Tony" Cugini, 71, Berlin, died Sept. 28, 2004, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Dec. 10, 1932, in Vineland, N.J., he is the son of Nicholas and Blodwyn (Shatto) Cugini. Preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Louise Sartor; children, Tony, married to the former Sharon Davies, Tomball, Texas; Rob, Houston, Texas; Karen, married to Scott Hagy, Mount Lebanon; Amy, Carmel, N.Y; grandchildren, Katie, Kelly, Michael, Nick and Alex Cugini and Angele and Luke Hagy; brothers, Richard, Johnstown, and John, Kingwood, Texas; and a sister Deloris Matsko, Tire Hill. A 1950 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School, attended University of Pennsylvania on a football scholarship and graduated in 1954. Received his master's in education from Duquesne University. Former teacher and coach at Bishop McCort High School. From 1959 to 1989 he was a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and former principal at Berlin Brothersvalley High School. He was a member, former lector and CCD teacher at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Macdonaldton. Former chairman of PIAA District 5, and former president and vice president of the PIAA Board of Control. Former board member of the American Cancer Society. Member of BPOE Meyersdale Lodge 1951, member and past president of the Berlin Lions Club, American Legion Harry Fisher Post 445 and VFW Robert Walker Post 7295, both in Berlin. Active member of the Berlin Football Boosters Club. U.S. Army Veteran, achieving the rank of 1st lieutenant. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Macdonaldton. Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli officiating. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery, Nanty Glo.
