He was the eldest son of the late Colonel Robert P. and Mrs. Sarah Cummings, and was born in Somerset, where he lived the greater portion of his long life. In early life Mr. Cummings, widely known as "Squire," followed the printing trade and in later years the vocation of painting and paper hanging. Locally he was known for his keen sense of humor and physical strength. His father was one of Somerset County's outstanding Civil War heroes and the Somerset Grand Army Post was named in his honor. When the Civil War came on "Bob" Cummings was elected captain of Company A, Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and later was advanced to the post of colonel of that famous regiment, which later became known as the Tenth Pennsylvania Reserves. Leaving a bed of sickness Colonel Cummings rode on horseback from Washington, D.C., to Gettysburg, and on the first day of that historic battle he was mortally wounded. Memorial Day services in Somerset are always concluded here at his grave. Meyersdale Republican, February 12, 1931
