Cunningham is laid to rest. Veteran Soldier, Minister and Justice of Peace. Dead at Ursina. Rev. John Cunningham of Ursina died at his residence at that Place on Monday, August 18, aged 76 years, 11 months and 5 days. He was born September 13, 1842, Near Chambersburg, PA. His family later moved to West Virginia. He also volunteered for the Civil War in April, 1861 and enlisted in the Co. A, 56th Pennsylvania Volunteers, he was only 19 years old. He was a private and was promoted step by step until he attained the position of lieutenant-colonel of a cavalry regiment, remaining in the position until he was discharged on March 25, 1866. He was wounded 13 times, being shot through the body twice. He was in the three days battle at Gettysburg and had a record of which any soldier could be proud. He was married first to Miss Mary A. Gallner they had nine children. Four of the children passed before him-John F., Benjamin and Mary A. Cunningham and Mrs. John W. Cameron. He then married Miss Marie Elizabeth Weaver of Mount Pleasant, PA, who survives him. The surviving children are Ira J. Cunningham, Connellsville, David N. Cunningham, Humbert, Mrs. W. W. Faidley, Kingwood, PA, Mrs. J.W. Shearer of Melville, N. Dakota and Mrs. J.G. Rose, Ursina. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was an active minister of the gospel for forty years, being an ordained minister of the Church of God.
