Cupp, one of the well-known double initialed Cupp brothers - W.W., N.N., G.G. and H.H. Cupp - died recently in Elkins, W.Va., from a heart attack. He was aged 71, and was widely known as a chain grocery store operator in Johnstown and other towns in Cambria County. He was born in Listie, Somerset County, on Aug. 5, 1874, a son of Philip and Catherine (Speicher) Cupp. He attended Juniata College, taught school for several years in Somerset County, and ran the Cupp farm before moving to Johnstown in 1899. He established his first store in Morrellville, in partnership with his brother, the late George G. Cupp. From this small beginning the business enterprise expanded. Subsequent formation of the Cupp Grocery Company took place with Harry Cupp as president. The American Stores Company in 1929 purchased the Cupp Grocery Company which at the time had a chain of over 50 small grocery stores, a public market and a cafeteria on Market St. After sale of the Cupp Grocery Company, Mr. Cupp lived in Philadelphia for a few years, then moved to Elkins, W.Va., where he was affiliated with the Financial Service Company, a credit association, until last November. Mr. Cupp and the former Anna Weller of Somerset County were united in marriage 44 years ago. She survives along with four of their five children, as follows: Paul Cupp, South Orange, N.J., manager of the Newark Division of the American Stores Company; Sanford Cupp, Johnstown, owner of the Cupp Insulation Company; Harry H. Cupp Jr., electrical appliance retailer in Elkins, W.Va., and Mrs. Frances Coventry, Bridgeport, Conn. He also leaves 13 grandchildren. He is survived by one brother, Nelson N. Cupp, Somerset. He was preceded in death by two brothers - George, who was murdered by a holdup man in Johnstown some years ago, and William, of Somerset, and one sister, Mrs. Harvey Griffith, Meyersdale. Mr. Cupp was a member of the Lutheran Church, and while a resident of Johnstown, taught Sunday school classes and also was a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA. For a number of years he appeared as a speaker on religious subjects in many local churches. Funeral services for Mr. Cupp were held in Elkins after which his body was sent to Somerset for burial in the Husband Cemetery, where committal services were conducted by Rev. Dr. I. Hess Wagner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. Meyersdale Republican, July 11, 1946
