"Slab" Custer, 75, of Bopie Lane RD 8, Somerset, died Aug. 15, 1998 at Somerset Hospital. Born March 30, 1923, in Somerset Township. Son of the late Walter P. and Mary (Ryan) Custer. Preceded in death by: wife, Betty M. (Keyser) on April 6, 1994; sister Rona; brother-in-law Albert "Bud" Bethel; and a son-in-law James Mostoller. Survived by: a daughter, Cindy married to Roger Newman of Friedens; sons, Timothy, married to the former Brenda Twombly of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Kevin, married to the former Julie Schnatterly of Friedens; grandchildren, Tim, Jayson, Justin, Ryan, Mia and Fred. Also survived by a brother Walter R. "Bobby" of Somerset, sister, Kathleen Bethel of El Centro, Calif., a dear friend Lovetta Lensbower, and many nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army where he served as a sergeant. Also served with the National Guard when activated for service in the Korean War. Member of Somerset Lodge 358 F.& A.M., Harrisburg Consistory and Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. A ham radio operator since the age of 11 (w3wgx). His hobbies also included playing bluegrass music and NASCAR/Winston Cup Racing. Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. Services of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Friedens Lutheran Church. Rev. Jack Timm officiating. Interment, St. John's Cemetery.
